I think some people are scared of colour. They’re afraid that they’ll have to wear a full-on print outfit, but you don’t have to; you can simply add elements. Even if you’re wearing a suit, or jeans and a shirt, there are ways to add pops of afrocentric influence,” McCloy says, pointing out that you can do it with a hat, a pair of statement shoes, and even an umbrella.

McCloy adds that men shouldn’t run away from neck pieces as there are ways to make this look work while maintaining your masculinity.

“In African culture men have embraced neckpieces. Do Swazi and Xhosa men not have neckpieces as part of their traditional attire? I think there is a way of making it work in one’s contemporary wardrobe. Men are kind of limited aren’t they? It’s the same thing a lot of the time, so it’s always a good idea to add an accessory just to stand out from the rest,” she says.

Asanda Sizani, Fashion Editor at DESTINY and DESTINY MAN magazines

Asanda Sizani says men shouldn’t restrict themselves to the basics, but should be adventurous, play with fashion and explore the new menswear options out there.

“Don’t copy what the mannequin is wearing in-store. Try to use that as a guide because it’s important for you to put your personal flair into everything you wear. One should see your personality through your clothing,” she says. “Men also need to use shop assistants to their advantage, especially at stores that specialise in menswear as the assistants tend to be quite helpful.”

Athi Myataza, Fashion Stylist

Myataza says men should never try too hard because the best form of style is effortless.

“It’s not attractive if a guy looks like he’s trying too hard. Men need to understand that one can’t follow every single trend out there. You need to select what’s appropriate for your lifestyle, your body, and your age and if you don’t do this, you’ll look like you’re trying too hard,” she explains.

She says style is very personal and is defined by where you are in your life and what you’re trying to achieve with your clothing. It’s very personal, so don’t let the outside dictate how you should look.
