Dressing up can be complicated for the bigger, more muscular, and buffer gent, especially because trends in menswear today don’t always have your bigger build in mind. Needless to say, shopping is a chore and finding something that actually fits an even bigger chore.

Here’s some style advice to help you up your game:

Skinny fits were never made for you

We know how tempting it is to buy a slim fit jacket or slim fit pants and so on because of how good it looks on other people and because it’s trendy, but unfortunately these cuts were not made for you. One of the best things you can do for yourself and your ability to breathe easily is to stay away from these fits.

This does’t mean that everything you wear has to be baggy, but rather opt for straight cuts. This way you’ll still fit into the standardised menswear silhouette without looking like you’re trying too hard.

Befriend horizontal lines

Horizontal lines are your best friend as a buff guy, especially if you’re on the taller end of the scale. These can either come in the form of a belt that will break up your body into two, or in horizontal patterns on an item that you’re wearing.

This will help break up your height so that you don’t look like a giant, and will also make you look less bulky. However, if you are shorter, you should invest in vertical lines and dress in monochromatic colours to create an illusion of height.

Invest in a tailor

Many people tend to think that using a tailor for altering your clothing is a mega-expensive task, but it really doesn’t have to be if you look in the right places. A good tailor will be your best friend when it comes to altering your clothes so that they fit well in key areas.

Find a brand and stick to it

One of the best ways to dress for your big body is to find a brand that works for you. There are certain brands, especially very up-market or youthful ones that just don’t cater to the bigger guy. But there are also brands with clothes that really work well for men with a big build. Find them and stick to them.
