Many of us can agree that 2017 feels like one of the fastest moving years and while we might still be in the heart of summer, autumn and winter are slowly creeping in.

If you have dry skin, it’s only about to get dryer with the cold months approaching. It’s important to deal with this before you bear the painful consequences.

Skincare expert, Anel Engelke, says that dry skin is characterised by a number of things.

“Dry skin is generally identified by a very tight feeling, almost like the skin is pulling too much. And in bad cases, the skin can also start to become quite flakey. Also, the skin will have the tendency of feeling itchy,” Engelke says.

She offers a few tips on how one can take care of dry skin and keep it hydrated:

Get rid of the bar soap

“A lot of men wash their faces with bar soap but this dries out the skin even more. Rather stay away from the soap and use a mild cleanser,” Engelke says.

We recommend:

Dr Joseph purifying cleansing gel (200ml, R400)

Stay away from products that contain alcohol

“A lot of shaving lotions and toners often contain a high percentage of alcohol. Not only does the alcohol ingredient make skin sensitive to the sun but it also breaks your skin’s protective function, which leaves the skin more prone to dryness, irritation and issues with sun damage,” Engelke says.

Use a moisturiser with active ingredients that suit your skin type

Engelke suggests that you use a moisturising product that has been specifically formulated for dry skin. Often this will be indicated on the packaging of the product.

We recommend:

Nivea Rich Nourishing Body Moisturiser Dry Skin (625ml, R72,95)

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate

“Regular exfoliation is very important for the man with dry skin, because it removes the excess layers of dead skin. The products you use can penetrate better and treat the skin on an even deeper level,” Engelke says.

We recommend:

Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Energising Scrub (100ml, R611)

Sun protection is key

“We live in a very sun-blessed country, so it’s important for men to protect their skin from the sun which can cause the skin to dry out,” Engelke says.

We recommend:

Eucerin Sun Protection SPF50 Sun Lotion (150ml, R205)
