Madiba’s birthday in pictures

We take a look at the celebration of Nelson Mandela’s birthday.

18 July 2011 was Nelson Mandela’s 93rd birthday and the former president had a quiet celebration with family in his rural home town of Qunu in the Eastern Cape.

President Jacob Zuma stopped by to present Madiba, South Africa’s first democratically elected president, with an architect’s impression of the Nelson Mandela Legacy Bridge that will be constructed across the Mbhashe River, between Ndondolo village, in Dutywa, and Mvezo village, in Mthatha. Other visitors included Mandela’s former wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and his grandson Chief Zwelivelile Mandla Mandela.

The world celebrated by dedicating 67 minutes of their time to performing community service in honour of Mandela Day.
